How to size a dog collar
Measure around the base of your dog's neck (where a collar naturally sits) with a soft tape measure, then add room for two fingers of slack between the collar and your dog's neck. Too tight restricts breathing and rubs the skin raw over time. Too loose and a dog can back out of it, especially narrow-headed breeds (see the safety section). Recheck the fit on puppies every few weeks since they grow fast.
Collar safety: breakaway, martingale, and ID redundancy
- Cats need a breakaway collar. A cat that gets a standard collar caught on a fence post or branch can choke or panic-injure itself trying to escape. A breakaway collar pops open under strong pressure specifically to prevent that. Confirm any cat collar you buy, including ours, is breakaway-rated before you put it on a cat that goes outdoors.
- Narrow-headed breeds can back out of a standard collar. Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis, and similar breeds have necks close to the same width as their heads, so a standard collar can slip right off if they pull backward. A martingale collar (see pick #8 below) tightens slightly under tension to prevent that, without choking the dog the way a slip-lead can.
- A collar tag and a GPS tracker solve different problems. An engraved ID tag or collar plate is what a stranger who finds your dog actually uses to call you, no app or battery required. A GPS collar (pick #7) tells you in real time if your dog has left the yard. The two are complementary, not interchangeable. We'd keep the ID information even on a GPS collar.
